Voices of the Atchafalaya
exhibit
Explores unique region and way of life
The Atchafalaya Basin of south Louisiana is a twenty-mile
wide swath of freshwater
cypress-tupelo swamp that contains some of
the state’s most pristine wilderness. Named
for the Choctaw Indian
words for “long” (atcha) and “river” (falaya), the
Basin’s
environment has also shaped a unique culture and economy.
Voices of the Atchafalaya, a new exhibit of
photography and voice recordings prepared
by the Louisiana State
Museum, presents portraits of everyday people from the Basin
describing their intimate relationship to the land.
The exhibit is now on view at
the St. Mary Parish Library System, Patterson Branch
from
August 3 to August 26, 2009. Hours are from 8: 30 AM to
5:30PM, Monday through Friday.
Featured are 25 large
black and white images by photographer John Armhein paired with
interviews by oral historian Earl Robichaux, both natives of the
Atchafalaya. Visitors access
the interviews via their
cell phones.
“Voices of the Atchafalaya provides a compelling look at what
may be a vanishing way
of life,” said Library Director Julie Vidos.
“We’re delighted to bring this special exhibit to
our community.”
The exhibit is on tour as part of the Louisiana State Museum’s
mission to preserve, interpret
and present the state’s rich history
and culture. Part of the Department of Culture, Recreation
and
Tourism, the Museum’s permanent collection of more than 450,000
artifacts and works
of art is housed at museum facilities in Baton
Rouge, New Orleans, Natchitoches, and Patterson, La.
