font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-variant: normal !important"> <span style="mso-tab-count: 1"> </span>The Atchafalaya Basin of south Louisiana is a twenty-mile wide swath of freshwater <br /> cypress-tupelo swamp that contains some of the state’s most pristine wilderness. Named<br />  for the Choctaw Indian words for “long” (<i>atcha</i>) and “river” (<i>falaya</i>), the Basin’s <br /> environment has also shaped a unique culture and economy.<i><br /> <br /> Voices of the Atchafalaya</i>, a new exhibit of photography and voice recordings prepared <br /> by the Louisiana State Museum, presents portraits of everyday people from the Basin <br /> describing their intimate relationship to the land.<br /> The exhibit is now on view at<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>the St. Mary Parish Library System, Patterson Branch<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>from <br /> August 3 to August 26, 2009. Hours are from 8: 30 AM to 5:30PM, Monday through Friday.<br /> <br /> Featured are 25 large black and white images by photographer John Armhein paired with <br /> interviews by oral historian Earl Robichaux, both natives of the <st1:place w:st="on"> Atchafalaya</st1:place>. Visitors access <br /> the interviews via their cell phones.<br /> <br /> “<i>Voices of the Atchafalaya</i> provides a compelling look at what may be a vanishing way <br /> of life,” said Library Director Julie Vidos. “We’re delighted to bring this special exhibit to <br /> our community.”<br /> <br /> The exhibit is on tour as part of the Louisiana State Museum’s mission to preserve, interpret <br /> and present the state’s rich history and culture.
